An internet accessible, stone by stone
documentation of all extant markers at certain cemeteries.
The project is
designed to make quality images of each marker available
to the worldwide genealogical community in such a way that the
inscription data (to the extent it remains legible) is directly
available for evaluation, maintains the usability of family group and
marker proximity, and is indexed to individual names.
Given the
capabilities and potential of digital photography, computer processing,
and internet publication it should be both possible and economically
feasible to undertake such a project. This is a pilot effort to
investigate the process and present early results for evaluation.
Elements of the presentation include:
- Each cemetery will by located by GPS, Survey, and
simplified
driving directions.
- The orientation page will have:
1.) A photo at the entrance, or turnoff marker (if
any).
2.) A sketch of the site, showing major locator features within
the grounds.
3.) Indication of the direction line of travel by which the site
was surveyed, indicated by blue numbers and a directional arrow on the
sketch.
4.) Links to various overview photos, indicated by red numbers
and a directional arrow on the sketch.
- Photos will include a 3 inch square "scale" card for size
comparison; and "RS" (Reference Shot") and "Back" cards, or a message
board note -as needed. When both "Back" and "scale" cards are found for
a
stone with only one photo - stone is turned 180° from general
orientation.
- A Sequenced List - Name, Year Born, Year Died, and links to
photos - one or
more as
needed for each marker. ( ?? used to list unreadable items).
These
are presented
in the "walk sequence" represented on the
orientation page.
- An Alphabetized List - same elements.
- Links to other web sites with pertinent information will be
provided if they are available.
Pages are inter linked. Use your
browser's back button to return from photos.
The initial effort,
Cox Cemetery off
Riverside Road south of Salem, is a small cemetery
dating to 1849.
